JOURNEY SO FAR...


It was 9 PM that day. The result of JEE(Main) was out. 

With vigorous tension I opened the portal and saw my result…..

A sigh of relief. I went to my parents and told “I will surely get chance in BE College”. 

From that day onward my mind had opted for this institute as my next destination. With many dreams in my two eyes I entered the college on the day of document verification. I was mesmerized. I had never seen such a huge,magnificent campus before. 

The greenery, the clock tower, the lakes- all were simply excellent, and I didn’t expect a graveyard inside the college. With all the counselling procedure getting over,  came 24th July- the first day of my college. The first thing I experienced was that nobody knows IIEST but everyone knows 'bikkolej' . 

I entered the class. A new journey began. After some days there was a tour to science city with my classmates. I enjoyed thoroughly. More importantly the classmates were promoted from being mere 'classmates' to friends.

After that, I experienced many incidents which I can never forget. One of them is the embarrassing physical education class where we had to wear short pants and run in the campus. It was really funny. There was a secret fear in my mind about the seniors. But what I experienced was exactly the opposite. The seniors are literally our “bhaiyas” and "didis". They helped us in each and every matter and told us how to proceed. Apart from them the teachers and non teaching staffs were also very supportive.

With the classes, practicals, assignment, exams, workshops, an unbound happiness of being in a college at last and above all the corona pandemic, time has just flown past me. I have realized that my fresher tag is suddenly gone! 

I cannot really wait for the college to reopen so that I can reunite with my friends to reignite the happy days we had before the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Bhaiya, will this bus go to IIEST?” “No no! Get down fast!” shouted the disturbed conductor. “Then B.E.College?” I stammered. “Yes, sure.   I will tell you when Bikkolej comes!” said the conductor, with much more respect this time.   Reality had struck me hard the very first day I boarded a bus to Shibpur.   That plain, white bus, with the Barasat-Botanical Garden board hung in front has only grown closer to our hearts with every passing day. The vast lake that welcomes you the moment you enter through the college gate. The towering structures that in all essence ooze out the history of its British past. Ever-young Lords and his ever-loyal wife Oval. The iconic clock-tower. The ghostly cemetery. The indomitable urge to take the longest ‘short-cut’ around the girls’ hostel. All of these have come to be a part of our very existence!   And the hostels. With cracked walls that have caught patches of damp, toilets with all sorts of weird patterns on the walls...

A COLLEGE FULL OF DISILLUSIONMENT...

Remember walking into a college full of people, and then slowly realizing that you are not what you thought you were. That you’re not best. That’s what IIEST looked like to me – a group of people better than me. Suddenly I am disillusioned – and more pained than humbled. There was this deafening show of skills and qualities of everyone around me – including my own show. The first week, all together with all kinds of false facades and walking with chest upright in the campus, was the most bitter period of hostel life. Away from home, family and deprived of love and food. Yeah, my roommates were my solace. I spent hours entertaining them, and they amusing me. And I once said, very jokingly and honestly – “You peeps actually laugh at my style of telling – not the joke. The joke is not funny” So, I basically went through the pain of disillusionment and didn’t end up being humbled. Maybe that was just my own case, maybe not.
