HOSTEL NIGHTS...


Be a boarder of IIEST hostel and feel the mesmeric magic of IIEST campus. The hostel life will give you an enormous and vast opportunity to enjoy, have fun and learn. It may sound like an advertisement but IIEST surely does not need one. It is a fact.

IIEST,rather B.E.College, is well famous for its green campus and being a hosteler, I have devoured its beauty at its full essence. The class is from 9.00 am to 4.35 pm. But the real class starts after 4.35 pm.

Midnight talks are very common on subjects of wide variety- literally anything and everything under the sun. Be it CAA-NRC or Indian Foreign Policy or the latest Salman Khan release. And sometimes just sheer nonsense. It is during these talks that you realize that each one has a different set of interests.

Mess is the place we have discussions, criticize the professors and the grading system till we are fully satisfied, curse surprise tests, all this amidst “enjoying” the mess food. By the way, like other colleges, our mess food is not so great!

You can knock on any door at any hour for anything- even for clarifying a stupid doubt or for borrowing a safety pin. Some of us intentionally do this to disturb the sound sleepers.

We play football in the corridors with stolen sandals and slippers. And laugh like idiots at the person trying hard to get them back.

We console our crying friends or just-sad friends, and if they are inconsolable we also try our best to cry with them,though mostly we fail.

Shoes,socks,tops, laptop, headphones, USB,shampoo - you can borrow anything you need, for as long as you want, until the lender “reminds” you for the hundredth time. After the hundredth time though, I have to sadly tell my friend, "Bro I have lost your socks!"

Some nights we play Dumb-c or Antakshri on the terrace or just gaze at the stars with soft music playing in background.

I assure that you will never be bored.

"The Psi-phone"(Illegally using hostel WiFi for some restricted necessary Site ;) ), late night table tennis matches, late night movies with friends, "mess foods sucks; Aaj Bahar khate hai", The canopy.. all are the brand ambassadors of our excellent hostel life.

There will always be someone who likes to dance or sing or mimic or act or tell jokes and shayari or simply entertain you by being the way they are. In fact we had rehearsed in our hostel room for the freshers- where seniors ask you to do weird things like pole dance. We had taken heavy preparations for all such things.

One memorable incident was breaking the mess window with a litti that was given as a part of our breakfast(it was too hard to eat).

Also each hostel has caretakers. Actually, they are a part of our family. There's always someone to give you medicine, bring hot water,bring your food to your room or simply ask you,”How are you?"

Actually our hostel life is so diverse that a whole Ramayana would have been written on it. But I will not drag this any longer given that space-time is curved and space is a limited in a blog.

“Bhaiya, will this bus go to IIEST?” “No no! Get down fast!” shouted the disturbed conductor. “Then B.E.College?” I stammered. “Yes, sure.   I will tell you when Bikkolej comes!” said the conductor, with much more respect this time.   Reality had struck me hard the very first day I boarded a bus to Shibpur.   That plain, white bus, with the Barasat-Botanical Garden board hung in front has only grown closer to our hearts with every passing day. The vast lake that welcomes you the moment you enter through the college gate. The towering structures that in all essence ooze out the history of its British past. Ever-young Lords and his ever-loyal wife Oval. The iconic clock-tower. The ghostly cemetery. The indomitable urge to take the longest ‘short-cut’ around the girls’ hostel. All of these have come to be a part of our very existence!   And the hostels. With cracked walls that have caught patches of damp, toilets with all sorts of weird patterns on the walls...

A COLLEGE FULL OF DISILLUSIONMENT...

Remember walking into a college full of people, and then slowly realizing that you are not what you thought you were. That you’re not best. That’s what IIEST looked like to me – a group of people better than me. Suddenly I am disillusioned – and more pained than humbled. There was this deafening show of skills and qualities of everyone around me – including my own show. The first week, all together with all kinds of false facades and walking with chest upright in the campus, was the most bitter period of hostel life. Away from home, family and deprived of love and food. Yeah, my roommates were my solace. I spent hours entertaining them, and they amusing me. And I once said, very jokingly and honestly – “You peeps actually laugh at my style of telling – not the joke. The joke is not funny” So, I basically went through the pain of disillusionment and didn’t end up being humbled. Maybe that was just my own case, maybe not.
